Germany

Berlin

March 10, 2008

Berlin, the capital of Germany is an inspiring city. There’s no doubt that recent history has given the city a unique identity, one that is only just recovering from division and is re-inventing itself in creative and innovative ways.

Berlin is known as the unofficial European capital of Techno, a music genre which flourished when illegal raves came about after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It’s been said that techno music had an influential hand in re-unifying the people of east and west Berlin.

Quite an interesting museum about the Berlin wall and some of the lengths people went to to get over it.

The sign on checkpoint charlie. Apparently it isn’t the original one.

The giraffe made of Duplo bricks, why didn’t I think of this when I was a kid?

The big canopy sort of thing at the Sony centre in Potzdamer Platz.

Inspired architecture near Potzdamer Platz.

A monument against some modern city apartments.

Berlin was bombed to smithereens then savagely sliced in half by a wall which took down anything in it’s way. The result is many wide open spaces where new buildings are sprouting up. Certain parts of Berlin are like jungles of cranes.

The Berliner Dom. An impressive cathedral which survived regular bombings in WWII, just like our St Pauls did. The daylight robbery of the entrance fee was well worth it as the interior is very impressive.

An interesting photo I like to think…

Sign for the Lustgarten, right in front of the cathedral. The garden is the site of the massive Stadtschloss palace, which was comprehensively bombed by Allied forces in WWII.
