Greece

Athens

June 27, 2007

Whenever I travel to the Greek islands, I always fly in to the Greek capital and enjoy a few hours there before boarding a ferry to the islands. The city has a vibrant street culture with lots of bars shops and markets and the people are very laid back and friendly.

Ios

June 25, 2007

Ios is a small island in the Cyclades. The village, Chora literally translates to village, and is a name shared by dozens of other villages in the Greek islands. Such imagination from the Greeks! It’s sleepy by day and lively by night, especially in high season. The island has several beaches, some of which can only be accessed by boat.

On the ferry to Ios across the Aegean sea.

Sunset over the Aegean.

Church bell, I love the loudspeaker hooked up to it, Greek ingenuity that is.

One of the churches on Ios, I was told there’s 365 churches on the island, one for every day.

Having visited the island in early June, there was an abundance of flowers about, unlike July when I usually visit when the heat parches the land.

Flowers, taken from the top of the hill overlooking the village and port.

The road which leads down from the hotel into the village.

Flowering plants, village in the background.

Church facing onto the port.

The beach next ot the port, a ferry coming in no doubt transporting a bunch of tourists from Athens.
